In Brief

In keeping with the spirit of concīs, submitting your work is simple:

  1. Submit up to 5 pieces (25 lines or 250 words or less) in a single attachment or the body of an email (no fees):
  2. Wait from 1-45 days.
  3. Receive your acceptance and payment (or a nice rejection, sans payment).
  4. Submit again (simultaneous submissions are ok, but please only one submission at a time to concīs)
  5. Watch for your work on the Home page, the Stream and then in the next Seasonal issue (which we will also email to you).

Chris notes: someday I’ll get around to writing some tips for would-be concīs-ians…until then, you might gain some insight from my Six Questions For… interview.

Complete Guidelines

concīs is about brevity: the succinct, pithy, condensed, laconic, crisp, compressed and compendious. Genre—if you believe in such labels—is unimportant: poems, prose poems, flash fictions, micro-essays, reviews in miniature, sudden fictions, haiku, tanka, American Sentences, insights, epigrams, the unclassifiable…they’re all good. Read work we’ve accepted so far and peruse some of our Inspirations for a better idea of what we mean.

Brevity is subjective. We’ve read 8-line poems that are 7-lines too long and 30-line poems that flash and fire quicker than a haiku. 25 lines of poetry/250 words of prose or less—even significantly less—feels right, and given the nature and mission of concīs, we do not exceed that. We do feel safe specifying a minimum length of one character, glyph, symbol or visual.

Rights, Payment & Donations

concīs pays $20 per piece for publication on the web site and as part of a seasonal collection/ebook/PDF (possibly in multiple e-reading formats). Upon acceptance, authors are given an option to donate their payment to Room to Read (a 4-star charity promoting literacy and gender equality in education across Asia and Africa; donations will supplemented by concīs) or back to concīs to help reduce operating costs.

If and when we create any kind of print publication and wish to include your work, we will negotiate a separate payment.

Simultaneous & Previously Published

Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please let us know right away if your work is accepted elsewhere.

Submissions of Previously published work is allowed if the previous publication was in print or not obviously available in another venue. But be aware: we very rarely publish such work.
